Bold shade or basic black, the color of your frames says something about you before you open your mouth. We stock frames in almost every hue there is, and our opticians are good at ending color paralysis, which is a real thing, and nothing to be embarrassed about.

Start with your complexion and hair color

After shape, skin tone is the next thing to think about. There are two: warm and cool. If your skin has a slightly pink or blue undertone, or you sunburn easily, you’re cool-toned. If the undertone is more gold or yellow, you’re warm-toned. Once you know which, hair color is the next factor, and eye color a smaller one.

Warm complexion, gold skin, brown or blue eyes, golden-brown hair

Brown and earth tones are your best bet. Deep, rich colors also work well, so be daring if you feel like it. Skip cool and pastel shades.

Warm complexion, pale skin, ash or blonde hair, blue, green or hazel eyes

Pastels, neutrals and muted frames suit you. Stay away from black, orange and anything else dark, bright or powerful.

Cool complexion, pale skin, light hair, blue or green eyes

Soft colors look best: peach, ivory, aqua, tans and yellows. Avoid black and white frames.

Cool complexion, pale skin, dark hair, dark eyes

Go strong: white, black, navy blue, magenta, deep purple. Earth tones won’t do you any favors, so leave the brown, orange and beige on the shelf.

Look in your closet first

Thinking about new frames? Think about what you actually wear. If your wardrobe is mostly neutrals and black, a bright frame is a chance to add the color that isn’t there. If color is already your thing, pick a shade that works with the outfits you reach for most.

Keep a pair of basics

Every wardrobe needs some basics, and the same goes for eyewear. Black, tortoise and metal are versatile enough for work or weekends, flatter any skin tone, and go with almost everything.

Or play up your eye color

The right frame color can make your eyes noticeably brighter:

• Blue eyes: brown for contrast, or sapphire and cobalt to intensify the blue
• Brown eyes: lavender or purple to contrast and highlight, chocolate or tortoise to make them look richer
• Green eyes: emerald and jade to intensify, plum or violet to make them pop
• Hazel eyes: green to play up the gold, or a rich brown to add depth

Come and see them in daylight

Color is the hardest thing to judge from a screen. Come in and hold a few against your face. It takes about five minutes to know.
